Team of the year 2011

Below is a copy of the letter complied by the President Colin Rudrum and sent to the Newport Town Council. It outlines the success of our Premier League Team in 2011. The result of this award was announced on Wednesday 28th March at Cosy Hall at the Town Meeting with our Premier Team Winning the Honour of Newport’s “Team of the Year”.

The Premier Team at Newport Crown Green Bowling Club won Major honours in Shropshire in 2011. They set new records when they won the Furrows Shropshire Premier League Title with a 12-2 away win in the final game of the season at Wem. It meant they finished with 254 points – eclipsing the previous best of 251 set by St Georges as well as the highest aggregate of 1,161, and for the secound season running were the most improved team, which was the highest accolade achieved by any team in the clubs history since it was formed in 1904.

Skipper Dale Rudrum was very proud of his team’s achievements thoughtout the season, and with the aid of “Chirpy” Dave Rhodes as vice captain they had every player giving over 100%, and a terrific wanting to win atmosphere every game. Unfortunately the team was runner up in the finals of the three county cup competitions, but to get there is an outstanding achievement in itself.

Dale Rudrum then teamed up with Tony Rhodes of St Georges, to win the Mike Hinton Premiership Doubles Trophy, the final competition in 2011. Team members, Peter Farmer, Alan Davidson, Chris Grocott, with Dan Hand and Dale Rudrum reserves, gained honours by representing the County side in the Crosfield Cup where they finished runners up.

Bowls is not a high profile sport but this team has certainly put Newport on the map, and gained much respect and recognition in the Country.
