BCGBA World Club Championship

Newport Crown Green Premier Team was invited to play in the Would Club Championship held at IRLAM Steel Recreation and Social Club on the 18th March Mothering Sunday. This was the second year of this event where the top bowling sides of each country are invited to play. Newport and Chester Road represented Shropshire as they were the most successful teams in 2011. 32 teams in total took part. Newport had to play the Warwick and Worcester top team the King George V.

The 8 players for Newport and their results;

Russ Pegram (Elvis) had a hard game and his opponent outplayed him in the corners, lost 7-21.

Alan Davidson (Ticker) managed to outclass his opponent and he won his game in the corners, 21-9.

Peter Farmer (Amos) struggled early and was well down before he eventually won 21-20.

Dave Rhodes (Chirpy) was 2-11 down and played terrific bowls and beat his opponent 21-17.

At this point Newport were 3 points in front.

Phil Emery (Emmo) couldn’t get started and was 1-8 down then he fought back to 7-8 but the green didn’t suit him and he lost 10-21.

Dan Hand (Chucker) had a close game throughout and the game could have gone either way losing in the end 17-21.

Dale Rudrum (Deezer) played a very talented young player and any luck went to the junior especially in his firing skill losing in the end 12-21.

Mick Jones (Jonah) the red ball wizard played a steady, pensioners game and won an entertaining game 21-14.

Ian Whittington (Wit) was the reserve and should there have been another game was to play, but alas the failure by 13 chalks means that was not possible and our team although sharing the games 4 each 130-143, King George V progressed to the next round to play the Welsh team Gresford Colliery.

The team gained a great deal of experience playing in this competition which will be value when they are asked to play in it again. Hopefully it will be next year after they have retained the premier league tittle in 2012.

This report was made by observations of Colin Rudrum who was at the venue supporting the team with the wags from Newport.
